Balance bike size and age guide

A balance bike has no pedals: children scoot along with their feet and learn to balance first. Getting the seat height right is the whole game.

Which size balance bike?

SizeInside legApprox. age
12" balance bike30–46 cm18 months – 5 years
14" balance bike40–53 cm3.5+ years

The test Hornit gives is simple: with the seat at its lowest, your child should sit and put both feet flat on the ground. Measure inside leg with shoes on, from the floor to the top of the inner thigh. Hornit says most 2 year olds are roughly 31–37 cm and most 3 year olds 38–45 cm, but children of the same age vary by several centimetres.

What age to start

Hornit says most children are ready between 18 months and 2½ years, and that inside leg matters more than age. If they can sit on the seat with both feet flat, they're ready.

12" or 14"?

A 12" suits smaller children starting out. A 14" gives longer use to a taller child or a later starter. Look at the lowest seat height, not the age on the box, and check the seat post has a good range of adjustment so the bike lasts more than one season.

Moving on to pedals

There's no fixed age. Hornit says most children make the jump between four and six. Trek lists 12" pedal bikes for 2–4 years and 16" for 4–6, and Raleigh's 16" starts at 95 cm tall. See the kids’ bike size chart for the next size.

Helmet

Balance bikes are still bikes. Halfords' toddler helmets cover 44–50 cm head circumference. See helmet sizes.
